ASMR Phenomenon

What the heck is ASMR and why do we see it so much lately? Let’s find out more about this global phenomenon on YouTube that even the celebrities are jumping on this boat lately. Some people start by poking fun of the people who are making it because it seems like a waste of time and straight up weird, but it slowly grows on you as the person writing this article learns it.

What is ASMR?

It stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. What in the world is that? It is considered a trigger that allows us to respond with relaxation and pleasure. This can be created through sound, sight and touch of many forms.

ASMR creates a tingle that travels from the scalp to the spine. This pleasant sensation does not apply to everyone who watches the video who gets a feeling of relaxation out of it. They are almost like goosebumps without you realising it. Something like the feeling of someone running their fingertips over your hand.

Still don’t get? Don’t worry. Just continue reading.

What types of ASMR are there?

Plenty! There are so many types of ASMR videos uploaded on YouTube to choose from sound videos to roleplay videos made through various forms.

The most common types that you will find on YouTube are the ones of people creating sounds usually by using the binaural microphone. This is to allow viewers to have a better overall sound. Sound videos are made with objects and with these good microphones, it projects very satisfying sound. Whether it is tapping on a bowl or a pet crunching on food, the videos are abundant.

As for whisper videos, it gives the same type of effects that usually help people to fall asleep. The other version of this is the soft-spoken videos. It may come off weird, but it is beneficial and has become very common among many international media platforms where interviews are done this way with celebrities.

The lesser known but just as relaxing ASMR type on YouTube are the roleplay videos. The makers or some may call as the ASMRtist would play a character for a different kind of trigger. This one focuses on personal attention as if the ASMRtist is giving the viewers full attention on video.

Those are just some of the types of ASMR that are commonly found, but go ahead and explore the other new ways of making us tingle.

Why do we watch ASMR videos?

Its effect varies for different people. Some people watch them for entertainment purposes, and others help them sleep. From helping to relieve stress or as a companion for anxiety, ASMR videos are not purely a waste of time as it helps others too. For first timers, it may feel weird before they experience the tingle in which it becomes a very calming effect that rushes through your body.

Be careful not to watch too many because it may cause ASMR immunity. When you watch too many ASMR videos at one go, the tingle sensation may be reduced because of the overload. Keep it minimal to keep the tingles strong when you do.

P.S. My favourite ASMR videos are of dogs chewing. What about you?
