‘The Light is Coming’ is the second song to be released from Ariana Grande’s fourth studio album Sweetener.
The song, produced by Pharrell Williams, has got people talking due to the prominent vocal sample with a man’s voice yelling, “You wouldn’t let anybody speak and instead.” This sample is sprinkled throughout the song.
The vocal sample is from a 2009 CNN clip featuring a heated exchange between a man and Senator Arlen Spector, serving the state of Pennsylvania at the time. It’s an infamous CNN moment, referred to as “town hell” in light of the tense atmosphere.
Political undertone, or is Grande just trying different things? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see until she drops the rest of the album on August 17!
