It is now evident that BTS is not the only K-pop group that is on the ascent to ultimate stardom in the western market. Blackpink is on the rise, having just confirmed an exciting collaboration coming up with none other than chart-topper Dua Lipa!
On September 4th, British pop star Dua Lipa took to Twitter to release the full track list for the “Complete Edition” of her upcoming self-titled album that is set to be released on October 19th this year. The post saw the confirmation of a collaboration with Blackpink on a song called “Kiss and Make Up”.
So excited to release a super deluxe edition of my album on October 19th with 3 NEW SONGS!! Think of this as a little gift to wrap up this album cycle! 🎁 Thank you for all the love and support. 💖👼🏻🚀🔥⚡️💋👀🌈💎🔮 pic.twitter.com/0lGq6gd5t8— DUA LIPA (@DUALIPA) September 4, 2018
Dua Lipa is an award-winning artist known for her unofficial girl power anthems “New Rules” and “IDGAF”, and she has become an exemplar for feminism through her outspokenness and eccentric, bold, and fearless style. This is also reflected in her favourite artists like Pink and Nelly Furtado. This goes to show that there is a strong synergy between the branding of both Dua Lipa and Blackpink, a girl group that is also representative of feminism.
Blackpink, one of the most successful K-pop groups, managed under YG Entertainment, has been on a winning streak with their career as of late. Since debuting in only 2016, they have already set a record when the music video for their song “Ddu-du Ddu-du” hit 300 million views in 69 days.
The rumours of the collaboration started in May, when the members of Blackpink Jennie and Lisa attended Dua Lipa’s concert in Seoul. People started speculating whether or not the ladies might concoct a collaboration ever since. Now we know!
