Childish Gambino has an incredible track record with dropping music videos that becomes the topic of every conversation in the following weeks. His videos are always intended to add more layers to a music track, with hidden messages and themes. This time, Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) shared a new animated video for his new track “Feels Like Summer”, which he released early July, with an Easter Egg-filled visual overview of today’s hip hop scene.
He worked with illustrator Justin Richburg on the video, and in it, a cartoon Glover walks through a cartoon neighborhood filled with rappers and musicians, namely Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott playing with blocks, Drake running after Future on a bike, Migos shooting hoops on a driveway, Kanye crying wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap as Michelle Obama hugs him, and many more scenes.
According to Genius, the website that breaks down and annotates hip hop lyrics, the track symbolizes climate change and global warming. Although the lyrics may on the surface seem very shallow, Gambino addresses details that argue that global warming is real. “Every day gets hotter than the one before/ Running out of water, it’s about to go down/ Air that kill the bees that we depend upon/ Birds were made for singing, wakin’ up to no sound.”
Childish Gambino is known for his skill in putting out strong messages about relevant social issues, and then playing it out with surrealism in his visuals. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for us later on.
This summertime pack is followed by his May single “This Is America”, whose video was multi-award-winning. Childish Gambino will be going on tour with Vince Staples and Rae Sremmurd next week.
