Only one of the most successful musicals in history, having endured long runs both in London’s West End and on Broadway, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical “Cats” is being transformed into a movie. Taylor Swift, Jennifer Judson, James Corden, Ian McKellen, and its latest addition, Rebel Wilson, have all been cast in it.
The film version will be directed by Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper, who won for his work in “The King’s Speech”. They will start filming in Britain in November. Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar in 2007 for her breakout role in “Dreamgirls”, will play Grizabella, the pseudo-glamour cat who falls on hard times, as well as sings the headline hit “Memory”.
‘Cats’ tells the story of a group of felines called ’The Jellicles’, and the night they make what is known as ’the Jellicle choice’, where they decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
Lee Hall (known for his work producing “Billy Elliot”) has adapted Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which was originally based on the T.S. Eliot novel ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’.
It is yet to be confirmed which roles Taylor Swift, James Corden, Ian McKellen and Rebel Wilson will be taking on.
‘Cats’ musical film adaptation is dated for a Dec 20, 2019 release.
