Taylor Swift No Longer Silent About Politics and Declares Her Support for Democrats

Taylor Swift has garnered a lot of criticism for not utilizing her platform to discuss politics and to stand up for certain rights, especially for her silence on Donald Trump’s presidency. But she has broken this long-held silence in a post made to Instagram recently.
“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” she wrote. She went on to cite her support of LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, and her opposition to racial discrimination as reasons behind her decision to vote.

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈
In the same post, she declared her support for Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen and Democratic Congressman Jim Cooper ahead of the midterm elections in her home state of Tennessee. “I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening, and prevalent.”
She went on to explain why she will not be supporting Tennessee’s Republican Representative Marsha Blackburn. “Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape.” She also highlighted Blackburn’s homophobic values, including her belief that businesses “have a right to refuse service to gay couples.” “There are not MY Tennessee values,” Swift stated. She concluded by encouraging her followers to vote and to vote wisely.
In the past, Taylor Swift has been heavily criticized for not speaking up about who she’s voting for. She was the “notable voice” that was missing from the largely united celebrity disdain for Trump’s presidency. “Her silence is striking, highlighting the parallels between the singer and the president: their adept use of social media to foster a diehard support base; their solipsism; their laser focus on the bottom line; their support among the ‘alt-right.’”
Swift was even accused of “[echoing] Mr Trump’s obsession with petty score-settling in their repeated references to her celebrity feuds, or report in painstaking detail on her failed romantic relationships,” as written in The Guardian. That was hardly the first time a news outlet had called her out. She had been barraged by demands from liberals that she denounce Trump, or even declare her support for women’s rights, and more. Swift’s absence in the women’s marches, and notable events, has been a reflection of her aligning herself with Donald Trump.
Throughout the course of her career, Swift has always said she sticks to music, not politics. She’s always sidestepped political questions since 2008. “I’m not going to sit here and go into my political views because that’s not that I chose to do. I chose to do music,” she said in an interview with Lifetime Television. It’s as if she was “constantly worried about saying something that could be construed as offensive to her fans.”
In the past years, there has been a campaign to break Taylor Swift’s “loud election silence”, and it seems this day has finally come.
